"Will You Activate Your Democratic Membership Today?" 2023-02-20

Most normal people have a sense of "belonging." They want to be a member of something: a family, a school, a church, a workplace, a political party. In reality, we generally are members of two or three, or more, groups. Memberships satisfy our need to belong, to be significant. Normally, we also want to be a part of something that is larger than ourselves, and we want the groups to which we belong to be involved in activities that promote our values.

Political propagandists know all about your sense of belonging…your built-in desire to be a part of something bigger than yourself. And they use that knowledge to entice you not only to be a member of a political party or movement, they use that knowledge to convince you give them your hard-earned money, you aren't a "real" or "committed" member.

But why should you pay to be a member of a a nefarious fund-raising group , and how does the payment for "membership" get used by those asking for the money?

The second part of this email appeal from the DSCC (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee) answers that question. Your membership fee (donation) will help to elect Democrat senators and expand the Democrat majority in congress. That sounds like a pretty good deal, right?

But consider these: Who really gets your money? Is the DSCC obligated to give any portion of your donation to senate candidates? If so, what percentage? And why do you need to pay to be a member of the DSCC, when you could simply donate the entirety of your money directly to a senate candidate without having it filtered through the DSCC? Why are you paying campaign-fund grifters, who skim your donation to support lifestyles that many people can only aspire to? Do you have some notion that being a member of the DSCC will benefit you personally, either financially or by boosting your status in society? Think about all those things.

What To Do Instead
  • Donate directly to the Senate candidate of your choice. Don't just blindly trust some group with a pompous name to do right by your donation.
  • Brag to your friends that you made a donation to your candidate of choice. Nobody is going to be impressed with your membership in the DSCC.
